Impact

AATB succeeds in its mission by targeting the four B’s of local Black community life: Barbershops, Basketball Courts, Beauty Salons and Barbeque Stands. AATB meets the community where they are: where they spend their down time, especially being available to Black underserved people, including young adults , rural and working-class families, youth, seniors, and the formerly incarcerated.

We work in Black underserved communities conducting regular engagement in municipal and other local elections: issues that impact everyday lives of working class Black families, not just Presidential Election engagement.

We address the social, educational and economic barriers to increasing civic participation in rural working class Black communities by identifying and leading campaigns addressing local issues.

Because unmet needs are a barrier to civic engagement, AATB’s service and resource programs are the on-ramp to political engagement. This includes food distribution, support for Back to School supplies and readiness, and family support, which includes housing and utility, pro bono legal resources and resources for helping returning citizens, formerly incarcerated loved ones get their voting rights back.

Women are the backbone of Black families and communities so AATB prioritizes empowering women and girls to actively participate y by using their voice through the democratic process of voting and engaging civically in their communities , providing skills and opportunities for their voices to be heard, and for consequential organizing that improves material conditions and civic rights.
